Masseter

A muscle in the cheek which clenches the lower jaw making it move up, to allow chewing.


A thick muscle in the cheek extending from the zygomatic arch to the outer comer of the mandible. It is important for mastication and acts by closing the jaws.


An important muscle of mastication that extends from the zygomatic arch in the cheek to the mandible or jawbone. Its contraction closes the jaw.


The muscle that closes the mouth and is the principal muscle in mastication.


Muscles that coordinate with the temporalis, medial pterygoid, and lateral pterygoid muscles to open and close the mouth and bring the jaw forward; sometimes referred to as chewing muscles.


The expansive muscle within the cheek extends from the cheekbone to the corner of the lower jaw. This muscle is responsible for elevating the lower jaw during the process of chewing.


The prominent facial muscle located on the side of the jaw that becomes firm and noticeable when the jaws are tightly clenched.
