A minute localized swelling of a capillary wall, which is found in the retina of patients with diabetic retinopathy. It is recognized as a small red dot when the interior of the eye is examined with an ophthalmoscope.
A minute, confined enlargement within a capillary, which is the smallest type of blood vessel. Microaneurysms within the retinal vessels serve as a distinctive indicator of diabetic retinopathy in diabetes mellitus; they might also stem from the obstruction of a retinal vessel. When scrutinized through an ophthalmoscope, these enlargements manifest as tiny red dots on the retina.
