Nephrostomy

A surgical operation to make a permanent opening into the pelvis of the kidney from the surface.

Surgical formation of an opening that allows the introduction of a small tube into a kidney to drain urine to the surface of the abdomen. Nephrostomy allows urine to bypass a ureter (one of the two narrow tubes connecting a kidney and the bladder). The procedure may be performed after surgery on the ureter to remove urine from the body and to allow the ureter to heal.

Drainage of urine from the kidney by a tube (catheter) passing directly from the kidney via the skin surface. This is commonly used as a temporary procedure after operations on the kidney. Long-term urine drainage by nephrostomy may be complicated by the attendant problems of infection and obstruction of the catheter by debris.

The formation of an artificial fistula into the renal pelvis. It may be used to drain an obstructed kidney or relieve hydronephrosis.

The insertion of a small tube into the kidney to redirect urine to the abdominal surface, bypassing the ureter and bladder, is known as nephrostomy. This procedure is occasionally carried out following an operation, often involving the removal of a kidney stone, on the ureter or the junction between the kidney and ureter.

The surgical creation of a fistula that extends to the kidney pelvis.
