In the realm of zoology, there exists a classification of worms characterized by their round bodies and lack of segmentation, distinguishing them from flatworms. These organisms, commonly known as nematodes or roundworms, bear a resemblance to the familiar earthworm. By differentiating them from flatworms, researchers and enthusiasts can better understand the diversity and characteristics of these unique creatures within the animal kingdom.

A group of long, tube-shaped worms, commonly referred to as nematodes, includes some species that are parasites in humans. These adult worms typically reside in the human digestive tract, usually without showing any signs of their presence. However, in some cases, the immature worms, or larvae, may migrate to different areas of the body, leading to symptoms.

In the UK, threadworm infestation is the most prevalent roundworm disease, predominantly impacting children. Less frequently, cases of ascariasis, whipworm, and toxocariasis are also reported. Additionally, some individuals come back from overseas trips with hookworm infections.

In warmer, tropical regions, the incidence of roundworm diseases is notably higher. These include not only the conditions previously mentioned, but also strongyloidiasis, guinea worm disease, and multiple forms of filariasis.

For most cases of roundworm infestations, anthelmintic medications are the standard treatment.

A prevalent worm, known as Ascaris lumbricoides, located in the small intestines, frequently results in diarrhea and discomfort, particularly in children. It’s also referred to as ascaris.
