  • Proctotomy

    A surgical operation to divide a structure of the rectum or anus. An opening of an imperforate anus. Incision into the rectum or anus to relieve ‘stricture (narrowing) of these canals or to open an imperforate (closed) anus.   • Proctosigmoiditis

    Inflammation of the rectum and the sigmoid colon. Inflammation that affects both the rectum and the sigmoid colon.  

  • Proctorrhaphy

    A surgical operation to stitch up a tear in the rectum or anus. Stitching the protruded walls of the rectum to decrease their size.  

  • Proctogram

    An X-ray photograph of the rectum taken after a contrast agent is introduced.  

  • Proctodynia

    A sensation of pain in the anus. Pain in the rectum or around the anus.  

  • Proctocolitis

    Inflammation of the rectum and part of the colon. Inflammation of the rectum and colon, usually due to ulcerative colitis.  

  • Proctoclysis

    The introduction of a lot of fluid into the rectum slowly. Hydration of patients using a continuous slow infusion of fluids into the rectum and colon. The treatment sometimes is used for palliation of thirst in terminally ill patients who cannot receive fluids by other means. Gradual introduction of a liquid into the rectum.  

  • Proctitis

    Inflammation of the rectum, characterized by blood in the stool, frequent urge to defecate but inability to do so, and sometimes diarrhea. It may be associated with ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease, or trauma, infection, or radiation may cause it. Inflammation of the rectum.   • Proctectasia

    A condition in which the rectum or anus is dilated because of continued constipation. Enlargement or widening of the rectum, usually due to longstanding constipation.  

  • Proctatresia

    A condition in which the anus does not have an opening. A birth defect where there is an absence of an opening for the anus or rectum.
