Demineralized freeze‐dried bone allograft (DFDBA)
By demineralization, the mineral phase of freeze‐dried bone allografts is partly or completely removed so that the collagen and noncollagenous matrix are exposed, thereby making growth factors available.
-
Demineralized bone matrix (DBM)
Bone matrix, usually allogeneic in origin, that may induce bone formation via release of growth factors and bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) from the matrix, occasionally after osteoclastic breakdown. Osteoinductive potential may vary, dependent on method of preparation and degree of demineralization.

Demineralization
Loss of minerals (as salts of calcium) from the body. In dentistry, decalcification, usually related to the dental caries process. Loss of mineral salts, especially from bone, as can occur in hyperparathyroidism and osteomalacia. Reduction of minerals such as calcium in body tissues, particularly related to bone. Loss of mineral salts, especially from the teeth…

Delta E
Total color difference computed by use of a color difference equation. It is generally calculated as the square root of the sums of the squares of the chromaticity difference and the lightness difference.
-
Delayed loading
Refers to the time of applying occlusal forces to a dental implant after its initial placement. A prosthesis is attached or secured after a conventional healing period.
-
Dehiscence
Incomplete coverage or cleft like absence of bone at a localized area around a tooth or a dental implant, extending for a variable distance from the crest. Premature opening of a primary soft tissue closure. Mode of opening (of a fruit capsule or anther). The natural bursting or splitting open of capsules, fruits, and anthers…
-
Dehisce
To open at definite places; to split or peel down along a natural line; to rupture or discharge the contents by splitting open. To open when ripe.
-
Deflective occlusal contact
The slide encountered from the initial point of tooth contact during mandibular closure causing a deviation in the mandible. An undesirable contact that displaces a tooth, deters the mandible from its anticipated arc of closure, and/or dislodges a removable denture from its intended position. Also known as occlusal prematurity.
-
Definitive prosthesis
The final prosthetic reconstruction. Any dental or maxillofacial prosthesis that will not require any further modification. Such prostheses are designed and intended for long‐term use.
-
Definitive cast
A replica of the tooth surfaces, residual ridge areas, and/or other parts of the dental arch and/or facial structures used to fabricate a dental restoration or prosthesis. Also called final cast.
