  • Le Fort fracture (Leon Clement Le Fort, French surgeon, 1829–1893)

Eponym for a midfacial fracture, classified into three categories (I, II, III). Le Fort I fracture: horizontal segmented fracture of the alveolar process of the maxilla, in which the teeth are usually contained within the detached portion. Le Fort II fracture: pyramidal fracture of the midfacial skeleton with the principal fracture lines meeting at an…

  • Laterotrusion

The movement of the mandibular condyle on the working side in the horizontal plane. This description of mandibular condyle movement is used in conjunction with other types of condylar movement in other planes, such as laterodetrusion, lateroprotrusion, lateroretrusion, and laterosurtrusion.

  • Lateral window technique

Surgical technique using a window into the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus to gain access to the maxillary sinus membrane. Following mobilization and elevation of the sinus membrane, bone augmentation materials (i.e., autografts, allografts, alloplasts, xenografts, or combination mixtures) are used to elevate the sinus floor and allow the placement of dental implants. If…

  • Lateral relation

An obsolete term for the positional relationship between the mandible and the maxillae when the lower jaw is to the left or the right side of the centric relation.

  • Lateral interocclusal record

Bite registrations of the teeth in right and then left lateral working positions, used to estimate the opposite side lateral condylar path and inclination.

  • Lateral condylar inclination

The angle made by the moving condyle within the horizontal plane (superior‐inferior movement) and the median plane (anterior‐posterior movement) as the jaw moves laterally. The condylar deviation or the degree of deviation (slant) from its original horizontal and vertical orientation when it is moved to one side.

  • Lateral cephalograph

Extraoral radiograph showing the region of the skull that comprises the bones of the face (i.e., the viscerocranium). It requires a 18 × 24 cm or 20 × 25 cm image receptor and is intended for diagnosis in orthodontics. It also has been used in preoperative implant examination to determine the size and length of…

  • Lateral

Any position that is right or left of the midline. On or at the side or margin; for example, lateral leaflets, those flanking the central leaflet, or lateral sepals in Orchidaceae. A term used in exercise to describe one body part’s position in relation to another. Lateral means away from the midline. A botanical term…

  • Late opening click

A sound made in the temporomandibular joint just before maximum jaw opening as the disk slips from anterior displacement to its original position between the glenoid fossa and the head of the condyle.

  • Late implant placement

Implant placement at least 6 months following tooth extraction. The chosen time period should allow for sufficient bone regeneration of the extraction socket, and consequently, implant placement without bone augmentation procedure. Late implant placement bears the risk of bone atrophy in the orofacial direction, particularly in the anterior maxilla.
