    A former term of a patient who has mental illness.

    A former term for someone with learning disability.

  • Mentalis muscle

    A muscle attached to the front of the lower jaw and the skin of the chin. Muscle that elevates the lower lip and raises and wrinkles the skin of the chin.

    A temporary or permanent condition which affects a person’s mental state, making them function less effectively than they would usually, or than the average person would be expected to function.  

  • Mental hospital

    A psychiatric hospital. A kind of medical facility, previously referred to as an asylum, that focuses on addressing mental health disorders. Individuals with mental health disorders are more frequently being cared for in general hospitals. Admission to a psychiatric facility happens when someone is committed under the Mental Health Act.  

  • Mental health review tribunal

    A committee which makes decisions about whether people who have been detained under the Mental Health Acts should be released. It consists of medical members, legal experts and lay members, who include people with experience in social services.

    Laws made by a parliament which lay down rules for the care of people with mental illness. The Mental Health Act (1983) outlines the privileges of individuals dealing with mental illness and the reasons for involuntary admission to psychiatric hospitals.
