  • Mucosa

Mucous membrane that forms the soft tissue barrier to the environment, particularly in the oral cavity. It is loosely attached to the periosteum, is movable, and consists of epithelium, basement membrane, and lamina propria. A mucous membrane, or tunica mucosa. Moist tissue lining, for example, the mouth (buccal mucosa), stomach (gastric mucosa), intestines, and respiratory…

  • Mucoperiosteum

Layer of periosteum, connective tissue and epithelium that covers bone of the maxilla and mandible. Periosteum that has a mucous surface, as in the middle ear and hard palate.

  • Mucoperiosteal flap

Full‐thickness mucosal flap, generally including gingiva, alveolar mucosa, and periosteum. A flap of mucosal tissue, including the underlying periosteum, reflected from the bone during oral surgery.

  • Mucolabial fold

The line, bend, crease, or area of change as the oral mucous membrane passes from its role as the mucosal tissue of the mandible or maxilla to form the lip. The line of flexure where the oral mucosa passes from the maxilla or mandible to the lip.

  • Mucogingival therapy

Nonsurgical and surgical treatment procedures for correction of defects in morphology, position, and/or amount of soft tissue and underlying bone support at teeth and implants.

  • Mucogingival surgery

Group of surgical procedures used in periodontics to augment the band of keratinized mucosa around teeth, to cover recession‐type defects, or to augment other types of soft tissue defects. Techniques include the use of free gingiva grafts, subepithelial connective tissue grafts, pedicle flaps, and use of barrier membranes, among others. Similar techniques have been adopted…

  • Mucogingival junction

The junction or area of union of the gingiva and the alveolar mucosa. The zone where the gingiva and alveolar mucosa meet. A scalloped, indistinct boundary between the gingiva and the oral mucosa on the alveolar process. The coral color of gingiva may be contrasted with the more vascular oral mucosa. Also called the mucogingival…

  • Mucogingival deformity

A departure from the normal dimension and morphology of and/or interrelationship between gingiva and alveolar mucosa; the abnormality may be associated with a deformity of the underlying alveolar bone.

  • Mucogingival

The portion of the oral mucosa that covers the alveolar process including the gingiva (keratinized tissue) and the adjacent alveolar mucosa.

  • Mucocutaneous disorders

Mucosal changes characterized by epithelial desquamation, erythema, ulceration, and/or the presence of vesiculobullous lesions of the gingiva or other oral tissues; often triggered by autoimmunity, sensitivity reactions, or medications.
