Nonuniform rational basis spline (NURBS)
A mathematical model commonly used in computer graphics for generating and representing curves and surfaces. It offers great flexibility and precision for handling both analytic (surfaces defined by common mathematical formulae) and modeled shapes.
-
Nonthreaded implant
Implant design that does not incorporate threads circumferentially on the external surface of the implant.
-
Nonsubmerged implant
Implant that is placed with a transmucosal element to allow soft tissue healing immediately after initial placement and to prevent the need for a second surgical procedure. Soft tissue healing occurs around the transmucosal element of either a one‐or two‐piece implant.
-
Nonsubmerged healing
Implant placement procedure incorporating a transmucosal extension for healing guidance. Special healing cap is required to extend the implant shoulder above the soft tissue level, allowing the suturing of wound margins around the implant neck/healing cap. This approach does not require a second surgical procedure and is often used in posterior implant sites.
-
Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID)
Class of medication with analgesic (nonopioid), antipyretic, and antiinflammatory effects. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the synthesis of prostaglandins from arachidonic acid.
-
Nonrotating gold cylinder
Attachment element designed so that the interface between the gold cylinder and the transmucosal element does not allow 360° rotation.
-
Nonrotating abutment
Prosthetic implant component designed to prevent rotation of subsequent component, similar to a natural tooth preparation onto which a restoration or other prosthetic component is placed in a predictable position. A portion of the component incorporates a flat side or similar design to prevent 360° rotation (i.e., spins) of subsequent component.
-
Nonrigid connector
A connector that allows a limited movement between the retainer and the pontic components of a fixed partial denture. Its usage is indicated in cases where a single path of insertion cannot be achieved due to nonparallel abutments.
-
Nonresorbable membrane
Membrane made of nonabsorbable biomaterial, most often of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (e‐PTFE). Use of a nonresorbable membrane requires a second surgery to remove it from the site.
-
Nonresorbable
Materials that do not degrade in vivo.
