Similar to a tooth, especially in shape. The odontoid, a peg-shaped projection found on the second cervical vertebra (one of the neck’s vertebral bones), serves as the support for the first cervical vertebra. In cases of judicial hanging, the odontoid becomes displaced, exerting pressure on the spinal cord, which leads to the fatal outcome.
