  • Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine

    A chickenpox vaccine prepared from attenuated virus.  

  • Vaccine extra-immunization

    The giving of excessive or repetitive doses of vaccines to children or adults, usually because of incomplete or inaccurate recordkeeping.  

  • Voiding urethrography

    Radiographic examination of the urethra during urination after the introduction of a contrast medium.  

  • Vicious union

    The union of the ends of a broken bone formed in such a way as to cause deformity. This term refers to the improper alignment of a fractured bone, also known as malunion. The term used to describe the incorrect healing of a fractured bone, also known as mal-union.  

  • Venous stasis ulcer

    A poorly, slowly healing ulcer, usually located on the lower extremity above the medial malleolus. Typically it is edematous, pigmented, and scarred. The skin is extremely fragile and easily injured. In the U.S. about 3.5% of people over 65 have venous stasis ulcers, women are three times more likely than men to be affected.  

  • Venereal ulcer

    An ulcer caused by a sexually transmitted disease (i.e., chancre or chancroid).  

  • Vasomotor tumentia

    Irregular swellings in the lower extremities associated with vasomotor disturbances.  

  • Volitional tremor

    Trembling of the limbs or of the body when making a voluntary effort. It is seen in many cerebellar diseases.  

  • Vocal tic

    Grunts and barking sounds that may be made by persons with Tourette’s syndrome.  

  • Viability threshold

    The body weight or gestational age of an infant below which the ability to survive is doubtful.
