  • Varus stress test

    A test of ligament laxity, where a passive force is exerted on a joint that, in the presence of ligamentous insufficiency, would cause the lateral joint space to open (e.g., lateral collateral ligament of the knee and radial collateral ligament of the elbow).  

  • Valgus stress test

    A test of ligament laxity, where a passive force is exerted on a joint that, in the presence of ligamentous insufficiency, would cause the medial joint space to open (e.g., medial collateral ligament of the knee and ulnar collateral ligament of the elbow).  

  • Vancomycin-resistant staphylococcus aureus

    A strain of S. aureus resistant to vancomycin that may become a serious nosocomial pathogen. Strains with intermediate resistance to vancomycin have caused life-threatening infections.  

  • Volkmann’s splint

    A splint used for fracture of the lower extremity, consisting of a foot-piece and two lateral supports.
