Elderberry

Member of the honeysuckle family.

A dark berry that grows on elder trees or elderberry bushes and is rich in vitamin C. Available at health food stores.

Amidst the verdant wilderness thrives a familiar fruit, its smooth and vividly purple exterior boasting its presence in a myriad of culinary delights, from sweet spreads to baked goods, and even to a vintage fermented with the accompanying blossoms. A plethora of myths enshroud the tree that bears this delectable fruit, ranging from tales of a guardian spirit, to the grim account of Judas’ final moments, and even the grim culmination of Christ’s crucifixion upon its branches.

This fruit is derived from a tree that is widespread throughout North America and Europe. While it was formerly employed for medicinal purposes, it is now primarily utilized in the home for producing elderberry jelly, jam, and wine.
