Enteric-coated

A medicinal preparation that is specially coated to allow it to pass through the stomach and to disintegrate in the intestine.


Referring to a capsule with a coating which prevents it from being digested and releasing the drug until it reaches the intestine.


Describing tablets that are coated with a substance that enables them to pass through the stomach to the intestine unchanged. Enteric-coated tablets contain drugs that are destroyed by the acid contents of the stomach.


A description of tablets covered in material that allows them to pass through the stomach and enter the intestine unaltered. Drugs coated in this way are those whose action is reduced or stopped by acid in the stomach.


A drug formulation in which tablets or capsules are coated with a compound that does not dissolve until the pill is exposed to the fluids in the small intestine.
