Enterocytes

Tall columnar cells in the small intestinal mucosa that are responsible for the final digestion and absorption of nutrients.

Terminally differentiated cells comprising the majority of the external surface of the intestinal epithelium. Unlike goblet cells, they do not produce or secrete mucins, nor do they secrete cryptdins as do the paneth cells.

The layer of epithelial cells that line the small intestine and are responsible for the absorption of nutrients from the diet.

Absorptive cells lining the gastrointestinal tract.

A nutrient-absorbing cell located on the surface of the small intestinal villus. Its free surface cell membrane is folded into microvilli that increase the surface area available for absorption.
