Epidermis

The outermost layer of cells on an organ of a plant.

Nonvascular layer of the skin. It is made up, from within outward, of five layers: a) basal layer (stratum basale epidermidis); b) spinous layer (stratum spinosum epidermidis); c) granular layer (stratum granulosum epidermidis); d) clear layer (stratum lucidum epidermidis); and e) horny layer (stratum corneum epidermidis).

The thin outer layer of all seed plants and ferns.

True skin of a plant below the cuticle.

The covering of an organ—its external skin.

In botany, the outermost layer of cells of the leaf and of young stems and roots.

Outermost layer of skin.

The outer layer of the skin, including the dead skin on the surface.

Superficial, outer layers of the skin that contain numerous nerve endings but no blood vessels. Made up of squamous epithelium tissue, the epidermis is divided into two layers. The outer stratum corneum contains dead cells that are sloughed off as new cells from the inner stratum germinativum push upward; other layers are also sometimes found especially in thick skin (e.g., the palms and soles).

The outer layer of the skin. The epidermis itself has four layers, from the outside in: horny, granular, spiny, and basal layers. Cells in the basal layer divide constantly to form new cells, which push up toward the surface. Typically it takes 4 weeks for cells to move from the basal layer to the granular and another 2 weeks to reach the top layer, where they flake off after another 4 weeks.

The outer layer of the skin, which is divided into four layers. The innermost Malpighian or germinative layer (stratum germinativum) consists of continuously dividing cells. The other three layers are continually renewed as cells from the germinative layer are gradually pushed outward and become progressively impregnated with keratin. The outermost layer (stratum corneum) consists of dead cells whose cytoplasm has been entirely replaced by keratin. It is normally thickest on the soles of the feet and palms of the hands.

The outermost layer of the skin, made of one to several layers of dead cells.

Outermost and thinnest layer of the skin; it is made up of five layers: stratum corneum, stratum lucidum, stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, and stratum germinativum.

The upper or outer layer of the two main layers of tissue that make up the skin.
