External surface of the eye’s tough, white, outer coat.


The outer surface of the sclera of the eyeball.


The most superficial layer of the sclera of the eye. It sometimes becomes inflamed (episcleritis) but the condition usually clears without treatment.


The outermost superficial layer of the sclera of the eye.


The tissue that links the eyeball’s conjunctiva to the underlying layer.
