Abnormal flushing of the skin caused by dilation of the blood capillaries. Erythema may be produced by various conditions; it is often a sign of inflammation and infection. For example, erythema nodosum is a disease of sudden onset, characterized by fever, joint pains, and an eruption of painful swellings on the legs. In erythema multiforme, a disease caused by toxins in the blood, the eruption consists of circular or irregular red patches, commonly occurring on the backs of the arms and hands and sometimes accompanied by systemic disease.

Redness of the skin due to dilatation of dermal blood vessels. It may be transient or chronic, localized or widespread, and it can be blanched by pressure. Erythema may be caused by excessive exposure to heat or ultraviolet light, or by inflammation of the skin due to infection, dermatitis, and various allergic reactions — for example, to drugs. It may be emotional (e.g. as in flushing), mediated by the autonomic nervous system.

Reddening of the skin. Erythema is a common but nonspecific sign of skin irritation, injury, or inflammation.

Erythema is an atypical reddening of the skin caused by the dilation of blood capillaries. It can be triggered by various factors such as heat, medications, ultraviolet rays, or exposure to ionizing radiation.

The medical terminology for the reddening of the skin caused by the dilation of capillaries in the skin.

The term refers to a skin condition characterized by redness. Several disorders, including erythema multiforme, erythema nodosum, erythema ab igne, lupus erythematosus, and erythema infectiosum (also known as fifth disease), exhibit skin redness as a common symptom.

Erythema, or skin redness, can be triggered by a variety of factors. These include physiological responses like blushing and hot flushes, environmental factors like sunburn, and a range of skin conditions. These skin conditions can be inflammatory, infectious, or allergic in nature, and include ailments like acne, dermatitis, eczema, erysipelas, rosacea, and urticaria.
