Excision

A cutting out; removal; the process of amputating or cutting away any portion of the body.


The cutting out of a piece of damaged or defective DNA by enzymes. DNA damage might be constituted by the presence of a thymine dimer which inactivates that part of the DNA. The region of the dimer is cut out and it is then repaired.


Female circumcision, which varies in extent from the nicking of the clitoral hood to the removal of all external genitalia.

Surgical removal of an organ or tissue by cutting out diseased tissue. An excision is used to remove tissue that is abnormal or diseased, such as a breast lump.


A term applied to the removal of any structure from the body, when such removal necessitates a certain amount of separation from surrounding parts: for example, the excision of a tumour, of a gland or of a joint. When an opening is simply made into the body, the term incision is: used; when a limb, or part of one, is removed, the term amputation is employed.


The process of surgically removing diseased tissue, such as a lump in the breast or gangrenous skin, from the surrounding healthy tissue is known as excision.
