Extended care services

As used in Medicare, services in a skilled nursing facility provided for a limited duration (up to 100 days during a spell of illness) after a hospital stay, and for the same condition as the hospital stay was for. As defined under Medicare, the following items and services furnished to an inpatient of a skilled nursing facility are included: nursing care provided or supervised by a registered professional nurse; bed and board associated with the nursing care; physical, occupational, or speech therapy furnished by the skilled nursing facility or by others under arrangements with the facility; medical social services; such drugs, biologicals, supplies, appliances and equipment as are ordinarily used in care and treatment in the skilled nursing facility; medical services provided by an intern or resident of a hospital with which the facility has a transfer agreement; and other services as are necessary to the health of the patients.
