Extracellular fluid

Fluid found outside the body cells.

Protein and electrolyte-containing fluid (e.g., potassium, chloride) in blood plasma and interstitial fluid that helps control water and electrolyte movement in the body. Normally, the body has about 14 liters (15 quarts) of ECF.

Liquid in the body that is outside the cells.

The body fluid outside of cells. It includes the interstitial (tissue) fluid, plasma, and cerebrospinal fluid. Water is the common solvent of all these fluids. Approximately one third of all body water is extracellular and one fourth of the extracellular fluid is plasma.
