Gastroesophageal Reflux

Reflux of gastric juice and/or duodenal contents (bile acids, pancreatic juice) into the distal esophagus, commonly due to incompetence of the lower esophageal sphincter. Gastric regurgitation is an extension of this process with entry of fluid into the pharynx or mouth.


The involuntary regurgitation of stomach contents or surface acids into the throat, with heartburn; it can be simple or serious.


Back- flow of the contents of the stomach into the esophagus, usually caused by malfunction of the sphincter muscle between the two organs; symptoms include burning pain in the esophagus, commonly known as heartburn.


Regurgitation of stomach contents into the food tube (esophagus).
