General paralysis (general paresis)

A form of tertiary neurosyphilis. It is a general medical condition occasionally associated with other neurological signs of syphilitic involvement of the nervous system and detectable with laboratory tests of the blood or spinal fluid.


A form of tertiary syphilis; an organic mental disorder occasionally associated with other neurological signs of syphilitic involvement of the nervous system. Detectable with laboratory tests of the blood or spinal fluid. Sometimes known as GPI (general paralysis of the insane), an obsolete term.


An organic mental illness characterized by destruction to parts of the brain as a result of the disease syphilis manifests in progressive decline in cognitive and motor function culminating in death.


A progressive variant of neurosyphilis that impacts one’s personality, motor coordination, and may potentially result in seizures or partial paralysis.
