Germinal epithelium

The outer layer of the ovary.

The epithelial covering of the ovary, which was formerly thought to be the site of formation of oogonia. It is now thought that oogonia persist in a dormant state from the prenatal period until required in reproductive life.

Epithelium that covers the surface of the genital ridge of the urogenital folds of an embryo. It gives rise to the seminiferous tubules of the testes and the surface layer of the ovary. It was once thought to produce the germ cells (spermatozoa and ova).
