Gilbert’s syndrome

An inherited disorder where the liver does not deal with bilirubin correctly.

A benign, hereditary form of jaundice secondary to glucuronyl-transferase deficiency, resulting in elevated unconjugated bilirubin. There are no hemolytic changes. No treatment is necessary. The presence of jaundice may not be noticed by the patient until it is detected by a laboratory test for bilirubin. Food deprivation increases serum bilirubin in these patients.
