Gingivectomy

Excision of a portion of the gingiva, usually performed to reduce the soft tissue wall of the periodontal pocket or to remove excess tissue in the condition of gingival enlargement.

Gingivectomy is a surgical procedure involving the removal of a portion of the gum margin. It is employed to treat severe cases of gingival hyperplasia (thickening of the gums) or to eliminate pockets of infected gum in advanced cases of periodontitis (gum disease). Typically, a dentist performs the gingivectomy under local anesthesia.
