Ginseng

A Chinese and North American plant with an aromatic root. Ginseng also known as Panax quinquefolius.

An herb whose root is believed to boost energy and is used in traditional Chinese medicine. Available at health food stores and some pharmacies.

American ginseng is a slow-growing perennial herb found wild in cool and shady hardwood forests throughout eastern and central North America. The American ginseng root has the same properties as the Asiatic ginseng (Panax schin-seng) which has been used in the Far East for thousands of years.

The virtues of ginseng were claimed to be so fantastic that Western doctors dismissed the plant as a panacea. While these fantastic claims haven’t been verified, after some 25 years of study, Russian researchers have confirmed ginseng’s powerful yet harmless tonic properties. Ginseng is often prescribed by Russian doctors for those who complain of sexual failure. Also, Russian researchers found that ginseng helps build up body resistance to disease and strain, either physical or nervous.

A plant root widely used as a tonic and a traditional Chinese herbal remedy.

Ginseng refers to a group of plants or plant extracts from the Araliaceae family. There are three different herbs commonly called ginseng: Asian or Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng), American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius), and Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus). Ginsenosides are considered the active ingredients in this family. While many health-related benefits of ginseng have been claimed, few have been substantiated by well-conducted research. The claims used by those who market ginseng to athletes include an ability to enhance endurance exercise performance and to reduce fatigue in general. In 2000, a review of research surrounding this topic concluded that there is a lack of evidence supporting an ergogenic effect of ginseng for humans.

A root used as an herbal remedy for various conditions. Ginseng contains steroid like substances called ginseno-sides and panaxosides that are said to stimulate the immune system and to possess antistress properties. Ginseng is cultivated in Korea, Russia, Siberia, China, Japan, and the United States. It is used to treat fatigue, stress, and diabetes and to speed recovery from illness. Ginseng has few toxic side effects and has been used for thousands of years, although some of the claims made for it have never been clinically proven.

An herbal remedy used as a stimulant, a tonic, an immune booster, and for sexual potency. Scientific studies supporting these indications are limited.

The Chinese plant in question, indigenous also to the Canadian and eastern US terrain, boasts an oblong subterranean organ revered for its medicinal properties.
