Glucose tolerance test

A laboratory test that denotes a patient’s ability to regulate blood sugar level after carbohydrate intake. One of the best laboratory tests (in terms of reliability) for detecting diabetes mellitus.

The ability of the body to deal with a relatively large dose of glucose is used to diagnose diabetes mellitus.

A test indicating the efficiency of the body in its use of glucose. Changes are noted in the concentration of glucose in the blood at determined intervals after ingestion of a standard amount of sugar. Recent research indicates that some increase occurs in blood glucose levels as people age.

A test for diabetes mellitus, in which someone eats glucose and his or her urine and blood are tested at regular intervals.

The test performed on an individual who has fasted at least 12 hours and then is provided 75-100 g of glucose. Blood glucose levels are monitored at hourly intervals and compared to established norms to confirm the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus.

Diagnostic study in which the patient is administered 75 g of glucose while fasting, with measurement of blood glucose at regular intervals to determine ability to regulate glucose metabolism.

A test done to determine one’s ability to metabolize glucose. A 25-50% solution of glucose is given intravenously over a period of 15 minutes. The amount infused depends on the patient’s weight.

A metabolic test in which a fasting patient drinks a quantity of glucose. Blood sugar levels are then measured at intervals of ½, one, two, three, and four hours.

A test of the body’s ability to process glucose. The test involves ingesting a measured amount of glucose and monitoring subsequent levels of glucose in the blood over a period of hours.

A test used in the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. A quantity of glucose is given to the patient by mouth, after a period of fasting, and the concentration of sugar in the blood and urine is estimated at regular intervals during the next few hours. These readings indicate the ability of the patient’s body to utilize glucose.

A way of assessing the body’s efficiency at metabolising glucose. The test is used in the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. The patient is starved for up to 16 hours, after which he or she is fed glucose by mouth. The concentrations of glucose in the blood and urine are then measured at half-hour intervals over a period of two hours. A similar test can be performed using glucose intravenously.
