Involves two marriages, two couples and an additional person, or one couple and an additional person. One of the most noteworthy experiments occurred through the establishment of the Oneida Community in upstate New York in 1884 by John Humphrey Noyes. The experiment ended in the 1880s when the community splintered and Noyes retreated to Canada.
