Dryness of the conjunctiva resulting from a decrease in lacrimal function.
Dryness with hyperemia of the conjunctiva in Sjogren’s syndrome owing to autoimmune-mediated decreased lacrimal function. The corneal epithelium may be thickened and visual acuity impaired. The condition is treated by use of artificial tears and other ocular lubricants.
Persistent desiccation of both the cornea (the clear front section of the eyeball) and the conjunctiva (the covering membrane of the eyeball), stemming from an insufficiency in tear production. This condition is linked to autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren’s syndrome, and systemic lupus erythematosus, all of which have the potential to harm the tear glands. Prolonged dryness can result in obscured vision, itching, a sensation of grittiness, and in severe instances, the development of a corneal ulcer. The most efficacious remedy involves frequent utilization of artificial tears.
