Kindergarten

Full-day or half-day classes for children of about age five, offered in the year before the first grade, either in the same building as the elementary school or in a separate structure; sometimes called preprimary, junior primary, or primary. Kindergarten classes traditionally focused on play activities and social skills, as some preschools and nursery schools still do. Today, in addition, kindergarten educators stress educational skills, especially those that prepare children for reading and writing, and many schools give students tests to assess their readiness for school and to identify any learning problems that might require special education. The U.S. Department of Education also recommends that parents exercise choice in finding the right school for their child; which provides a checklist for evaluating schools.
