Kindling

Progressively increasing response of the brain to successive electrical stimuli. In bipolar disorder, it is important to prevent the onset of mania because with each manic episode, there is a tendency for the period until the next episode to become shorter. In this regard, it is believed that the manic episode “kindles” the brain by making it more susceptible to a subsequent manic episode.


The triggering of seizures as a result of repetitive low-amplitude electrical stimulation of the brain. This phenomenon is typical of seizures in persons suffering alcohol (and other forms of drug) withdrawal.
