Macrocytosis

The condition of having macrocytes in the blood.

The presence of abnormally large red cells (macrocytes) in the blood. Macrocytosis is a feature of certain anemias (macrocytic anemias), including those due to deficiency of vitamin B12 or folic acid, and also of anemias in which there is an increase in the rate of red cell production.

The presence of an excess number of macrocytes as in pernicious anaemia, alcohol dependency, pregnancy, myxoedema and myelomatosis, and also caused by vitamin B12 deficiency.

Condition in which erythrocytes are larger than normal, (e.g., in folate or vitamin B12 deficiencies).

Macrocytosis is a condition where the red blood cells are larger than usual. While there are various potential causes, megaloblastic anemia and alcohol effects are among the most common.
