In DSM-III a group of disorders in which there is a prominent and persistent disturbance of mood {depression or mania) and a full syndrome of associated symptoms. The category includes bipolar disorder and major depression. The disorders are usually episodic but could be chronic. In DSM-IIl-R the term major affective disorders has been changed to mood disorders and is divided into bipolar and depressive disorders.
