A drug that prevents bacterial growth and was formerly used to treat infections of the urinary system (it has now largely been replaced by antibiotics). Mandelic acid is administered by mouth.
Also known as mandelamine, a non-toxic ketoacid used occasionally to treat urinary tract infections, especially those due to Escherichia coli and Streptococcus (or Enterococcus) faecalis. It is administered in doses of 3 grams several times daily and, as it is only effective in an acid urine, ammonium chloride must be taken at the same time.
