Masculinization

The process by which tissues in the embryo that are sex-neutral become masculine in their structure and function.


The development of male characteristics such as body hair and a deep voice in a woman, caused by hormone deficiency or by treatment with male hormones.


Abnormal development of male secondary sexual characteristics (e.g., excess body and facial hair, deeper voice) by a female, usually as the result of hormonal treatment or malfunction of the adrenal glands.


The normal process by which a male acquires sex-specific attributes during sexual maturation as a result of the response of the body to the male hormones called androgen hormones. Androgen hormones, including testosterone, are produced in the testicles in response to stimulation by the pituitary hormone LH (luteinizing hormone).


Development of excess body and facial hair, deepening of the voice, and increase in muscle bulk (secondary male sexual characteristics) in a female due to a hormone disorder or to hormone therapy.


The normal development of secondary male sex characteristics that occur at puberty.
