Mastery learning

A technique of teaching whereby learners are given many opportunities to master a series of examinations, evaluated with reference to specified criteria.

An educational approach that emphasizes teaching every student to meet preset instructional objectives, such as learning skills, acquiring knowledge, or solving certain types of problems, the idea being to have all students meet at least a minimum standard level. In mastery learning, students are allowed varying amounts of time as much time as each needs to meet the objectives, as opposed to the traditional approach of giving passing grades to those who can learn material within a limited time and failing the rest.
