The nipple-shaped bone protuberance of the temporal bone. Mastoid cells or sinuses connect with the middle ear. The sinuses may become infected as the result of untreated middle ear infections; a condition known as mastoiditis.
Shaped like a nipple.
Belonging to the part of the temporal bone which protrudes at the side of the head behind the ear.
Breast like in shape or appearance, especially the bump (mastoid process of the temporal bone) behind the ear.
Portion of the temporal bone of the skull located just behind and inferior to the ear.
The base of the temporal bone located in the skull contains a section known as the mastoid. This mastoid region includes a protrusion referred to as the mastoid process, which can be palpated behind the ear. The bone itself is characterized by a network of hollow spaces called air cells, and these spaces are linked to a larger cavity named the mastoid antrum. This antrum extends into the middle ear.
In certain situations, infections originating in the middle ear can extend into the mastoid bone, leading to the development of acute mastoiditis.
The mastoid process; the air-filled cavities located behind and above the ear, connecting to the middle ear.
