Maternal mortality rate

The number of deaths of mother from childbirth per 10,000 live births in a given year.

The number of deaths due to complications of pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium expressed as a proportion of all births (i.e. including stillbirths). Formerly the rate was expressed per 1000 births but with the low levels currently reported it is customary to use a base of a 100,000 births.

The number of maternal deaths in 1 year from puerperal causes (i.e., those associated with pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium) within 42 days after delivery divided by the number of live births in that same year. This value is usually expressed as deaths per 100,000 live births.
