Value that separates the highest 50% of the scores from the lowest 50%. Useful in describing the central tendency of abnormally distributed data, because it is less influenced by the outlier data (i.e., extreme values) that skew the distribution and can have a disproportionate effect on the mean.
Situated in the middle
This is the reading or observation above or below which an equal number of observations fall.
A measure of central tendency that occupies the middle position in the rank order of values.
A measure of central tendency of a frequency distribution.
Towards the central midline of the body, or placed in the middle.
Value where half the values fall below and half fall above this value.
Situated in or toward the plane that divides the body into right and left halves.
A statistical term. The middle point in a series of things arranged in order of size. The median for the series 7, 8, 9,10, and 51 is 9, the third of the five items. For the same series, the mean (arithmetic average) for that series would be 17 (the sum, 85, divided by the number of quantities, 5). When the series has an even number of items, the median is customarily calculated as the average of the two middle items.
A statistical term describing the central value of a set of values placed in order of size. The median divides the set into two halves.
In statistics, a number obtained by arranging a given series in order of magnitude and selecting that number that has an equal number of values above and below it. Thus, in the series 5, 7, 100, 101, 102, the median is 100.
