The bureau which administers the Medicaid program at the Federal level. It is part of the Social and Rehabilitation Service, which administers most of the welfare programs within the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. It is an organization of approximately 200 people in Washington’s central office and 100 people in the ten HEW regional offices. Direct administration of Medicaid programs is carried out by the States.
