An antimalarial drug. Mefloquine hydrochloride (Lariam) is used to prevent or treat malaria. It works in the bloodstream to poison the parasite that causes malaria. To avoid relapse after initial treatment with mefloquine hydrochloride, some people with malaria must take another antimalarial drug as well.
