Meningococcal meningitis

The commonest epidemic form of meningitis, caused by a bacterium Neisseria meningitidis, where the meninges become inflamed causing headaches and fever.


Meningitis caused by various serogroups of Neisseria meningitidis, a gram-negative diplococcus.


A prevalent type of bacterial meningitis predominantly affects children and young adults. The disease spreads through respiratory droplets and can quickly transmit among individuals in close proximity, like students in boarding schools. Without timely treatment, it can escalate to the potentially fatal condition called meningococcaemia.
