Mesothelium

A layer of cells lining a serous membrane.

A type of epithelium (surface cell layer) that lines the body cavities of the peritoneum (the membrane lining the abdominal cavity), the pleura (the membranes that cover the lungs), and the pericardium (the membrane surrounding the heart). Malignant tumors of this lining are often related to asbestos exposure.

The single layer of cells that lines serous membranes. It is derived from embryonic mesoderm.

Epithelium derived from embryonic mesenchymal cells. Mesolthelium forms the serous epithelia throughout the inside of the body.

A protective membrane or sac that safeguards the vital internal organs of the body while facilitating their unrestricted movement, such as during the contraction of the lungs. The mesothelium encompasses various regions, including the peritoneum in the abdominal cavity, the pleura in the chest cavity, and the pericardium surrounding the heart.

This form of epithelium, which forms the outer cell layer, covers the peritoneum (the membrane lining the abdominal cavity), the pleura (the membrane enclosing the chest cavity and enveloping the lungs), and the pericardium (the covering of the heart).
