Metyrapone

A compound that inhibits the production of the adrenal steroids, the glucocorticoids.

A drug that inhibits the production of cortisol in the adrenal cortex, resulting in an increase in ACTH production and thus (completing the feedback control cycle) greater synthesis of the chemical precursors of cortisol. Metyrapone is used to treat patients with cushing’s syndrome (a condition caused by excess amounts of corticosteroid hormones in the body) where surgery is not possible.

A drug that inhibits adrenocortical secretion from the adrenal gland. It is used to treat excessive adrenocortical hormone secretion and to test the function of the adrenal gland.
