Red blood cells that are not grossly obvious but are found instead on microscopic examination of a urine specimen. They may be found in patients with tumors of the urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, or bladder); glomerular diseases; kidney or ureteral stones; urinary tract infections; trauma; or in patients without obvious or demonstrable pathology.
