A type of surgery used in the treatment of skin cancer; also known as microscopically controlled surgery. Mohs surgery is performed on an outpatient basis using a local anesthetic. In Mohs surgery, a cancerous tumor is removed one thin layer at a time. The surgeon slowly removes successive layers of skin until only healthy tissue remains. Afterward, the tissue is examined under a microscope.
