A statistic that measures the frequency at which death occurs in a population within a given time. The mortality rate can be calculated in a number of ways. The crude mortality rate is determined by dividing the number of deaths within a population by the total number of people in that population, usually including everyone older than 1 year. With an age-adjusted mortality rate, the rate is modified mathematically to account for the number of people of different ages in the population. This allows researchers to compare mortality in different populations even if their age structures differ (for example, significantly more older people in one group than in another).
