Mosaic

Non-homogeneous distribution of species or communities.

An organism, part of which is made up of tissue genetically different from the remaining part.

A pattern made up of many small segments.

This phenomenon, known as foliar mosaicism, is characterized by the presence of multiple small spots with a distinct boundary that are noticeable due to their contrasting color against the background of the leaf. These spots are usually delineated by the veins and can take the form of angular green shapes on a mostly yellow surface. Alternatively, the areas surrounding the veins may turn yellow, resulting in a yellow-and-green mosaic. If these spots later blend together, a mottled pattern may emerge, similar to blotches or splotches.

The term denotes a genetic condition wherein an individual’s cells exhibit a variation in the composition of chromosomes. In the case of Down syndrome, this can entail a combination of cells with the typical 46 chromosomes and others with an atypical count of 47 chromosomes.
